Echoes of Aincrad Death Game Mode - Permadeath Rules
Death Game Mode is Echoes of Aincrad's signature SAO mechanic: optional permadeath layered onto any of the four standard difficulties. It is not a separate difficulty tier, and it is not recommended for first-time players — even with Deluxe or Ultimate Early Unlock.
Confirmed Rules
Seven rules before you enable permadeath
01
Permanent save deletion
If you die in Death Game Mode, that character's save is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
02
Modifier, not a fifth difficulty
Death Game Mode is a modifier, not a fifth difficulty — it stacks with Story, Normal, Hard, or Very Hard.
03
Standard unlock after story clear
Standard unlock: after clearing the main story. Deluxe and Ultimate include Early Unlock from a new save.
04
Two save slots only
Only two of the three save slots can be used for Death Game Mode runs.
05
Selected at save creation
The mode must be selected when creating a second or later save file — not mid-playthrough.
06
Demo transfer restriction
Demo save data transferred to the full game cannot be switched to Death Game Mode.
07
Action RPG, not a soulslike loop
Developers describe the game as an action RPG, not a soulslike — Death Game adds permadeath, not a souls-style loop.
Unlock and access
How Death Game Mode stacks with standard difficulties, save slots, and edition bonuses.
Difficulty stacking
Choose Story for a lower-pressure permadeath experience, or Very Hard for maximum challenge with save deletion. The modifier adds consequence — it does not replace the four base difficulty settings. See thedifficulty and save guide for full details.
Save slots and unlock
Three save slots exist. Death Game Mode uses slots 2 and 3 only, selected at new character creation. Standard players unlock the mode after story clear; Deluxe/Ultimate owners get Early Unlock on a fresh save.
Demo transfer limitation
Carried-over demo saves cannot enter Death Game Mode. Create a new save file on slot 2 or 3 after learning the systems on your transferred demo progress or a normal first save.
Preparation Standard
Before a save-deleting run
Learn on a normal save first
Learn boss patterns on a normal save before risking a permanent-deletion run.
Reserve slot 2 or 3
Use save slot 2 or 3 for Death Game — keep slot 1 as your learning or story save.
Restock before boss barriers
Return to Town of Beginnings before boss rooms; restock healing, SP recovery, and crafted items.
Set partner commands for the fight
Set partner Support Skill and Switch/Free Mode for the specific boss problem.
Upgrade before commitment
Upgrade weapon level, spend Growth Points, and review EX-Mod effects before starting.
Avoid experimental builds
Avoid testing unfamiliar weapons or Sword Skills inside a save-deleting attempt.
